Lake City · Columbia County · dispatched from 37 Fairmont Ln
Lake City isn't coastal Florida, and your air conditioner already knows it.
Inland afternoons run hotter than the beach and winter nights run colder. We size, fix and maintain equipment for both ends of that, and we'll tell you the drive time before you ask.

The belief that costs Lake City homeowners every January
Ask around Columbia County and you’ll hear a version of the same idea: this is Florida, so the air conditioner is the whole story and heat is an afterthought. It’s half right. Cooling season runs hard from May into September, with 90-degree afternoons and a thunderstorm most days. But the first 32-degree night usually lands between late November and mid-December, most winters bring several freezes, and some drop into the 20s. Equipment installed as if Lake City were a beach town handles the summer fine and then leans on its electric strip heat all winter.
That’s the correction we make most often out here: a system has to be chosen, charged and set up for a climate that swings both ways.
Four kinds of house, from the courthouse to Forest Cove
Inside the city limits the median home dates to about 1980. Downtown around Lake DeSoto, the frame houses and brick storefronts near the Hotel Blanche were built long before ductwork. The 1950s-to-80s block ranches in the older neighborhoods carry flex duct in hot attics, often undersized from the start. Southwest of town in the 32024 zip, Callaway, Cypress Landing, Summers Ridge and Emerald Lakes went up between the late 1990s and 2007, and that wave of builder-grade equipment is reaching the age where compressors and coils begin to fail. Then there’s the newest ring: Arbor Greene, Hunter Oaks, The Reserve at Jewel Lake and Forest Cove, where the question is setup, not repair.
Beyond the city, roughly a third of Columbia County’s housing is manufactured homes on acreage, with belly-board duct, well water and a Clay Electric meter.

The drive, stated plainly
Cook’s is headquartered at 37 Fairmont Ln in Palm Coast. Lake City is 121 miles from that door, roughly two hours and twenty-five minutes by SR 100 into Watertown or by I-10. There is no Lake City storefront. What there is instead is a dispatcher in Palm Coast who can tell you whether a truck is already working Columbia County, and a phone answered around the clock without an after-hours surcharge. When you call, you’ll hear a real arrival window, not a hopeful one.
Repair, tune-up, replace, breathe
Repair means any brand: Lennox, Carrier, Bryant, Trane and whatever the previous owner installed. Capacitors cooked by a July afternoon, control boards taken out by lightning, drain lines scaled shut by iron-heavy well water are the common ones here.
Maintenance means two visits a year, one before pine pollen and oak catkins pack the outdoor coil, one before the first freeze so the heat pump isn’t discovered dead on a 28-degree morning.
Replacement means a Lennox system sized to the house, not to the old nameplate, with the Clay Electric or FPL rebate that applies to your meter and an honest word about the federal credit that no longer does.
Indoor air means filtration, dehumidification and duct sealing for houses that stay sticky through September and dusty every March.
Commercial means rooftop and split systems for the clinics around the VA Medical Center and the hotels at the I-75/I-10 interchange.
Who picks up
Cook’s is family-owned. Jerry handles sales and Sean leads the technical side, and both names show up in our reviews because they’re the people doing the work. No call center, no franchise.

Questions from Lake City callers
How often is a Cook's truck actually in Columbia County?
Often enough that most Lake City visits are taken by a technician already working the area. Maintenance and non-urgent repairs are grouped into route days; emergencies go out whenever they come in, any hour, with the drive time stated plainly.
Why does the house feel sticky in September even with the AC running?
By September the system is handling less heat but just as much moisture, so it runs short cycles and pulls less water from the air. Longer run times, variable-speed equipment or a dedicated dehumidifier are the fixes.
I'm on Clay Electric, not FPL. Does that change anything about a new system?
It changes the rebate. Clay Electric’s Energy Smart program pays its heat-pump rebate to you as a member after purchase. FPL’s program, which covers addresses inside Lake City, Five Points and Watertown, works through enrolled contractors instead.
Our 1970s ranch off SR 247 never cools the back bedrooms. Is it the unit or the house?
Usually the house. Block ranches from that era carry flex duct that has sagged, split or was undersized from the start, and one small return can’t feed the whole floor plan. We measure airflow at the registers before anyone talks about tonnage.
House climbing past 85 in Lake City?
Call {{phone}}. A dispatcher answers, the drive time is honest, and the price doesn't change after dark.
