Two machines, one winter

Set them side by side. A straight-cool air conditioner cools the house and leaves heating to electric strips in the air handler. A heat pump is the same outdoor unit with a reversing valve, so in winter it pulls heat from the outside air and moves it indoors, using strips only as backup. On a 55-degree January afternoon in Lake City the heat pump heats the house for a fraction of what the strips cost. On a 24-degree morning the two converge, because the heat pump leans on its strips too.

For a coastal town with four frosts a year, the premium for a heat pump is a close call. For Columbia County, with its first freeze in late November or early December, several more through winter, and the occasional plunge into the 20s, it is not close. The heat pump wins on the winter bills, and the premium is modest. The exception is a house with natural gas from Lake City Utilities and a furnace it likes; that house can pair a straight-cool unit with the furnace and skip the strips entirely.

The registration deadline matters more than the efficiency number

Here is why we read the warranty before the brochure. Lennox, like every manufacturer, offers a base parts warranty and a longer one that applies only if the equipment is registered within a window after installation. Miss the window and the coverage shortens by years. We register every unit we install in your name before the truck leaves, and we give you the confirmation. If another contractor installed your current system, go find the paperwork tonight; it is the single most valuable thing in the file.

The second thing we read aloud: most extended warranties require that the system be maintained by a qualified technician and that the indoor and outdoor units be a matched pair. A new condenser on a mismatched old air handler can put the whole warranty in question.

Maintenance is a condition, not a suggestion

A heat pump works harder in Lake City than almost anywhere in Florida, because it runs in both directions. Pine pollen and oak catkins coat the outdoor coil every spring; a summer of thunderstorms follows; then the coil ices and defrosts through winter. Two visits a year, one before the May heat and one before the December freezes, keep the coil clean, the refrigerant charge correct, the defrost control working and the strip heat verified. That schedule also satisfies the warranty’s maintenance clause, which is reason enough on its own. Cook’s sells maintenance agreements that cover it; ask for the tier details. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

Buying guidance for freeze nights and two utilities

  • Capacity: size for the cooling load, which is larger here than the heating load, and verify that the heating output at design temperature plus strips covers the cold nights. Oversizing for winter wrecks summer humidity control.
  • Staging: two-stage or variable-speed. Both run quieter, dry the house better in June, and keep the strips off longer in January.
  • Strip heat: sized to the house, not the largest kit that fits. Oversized strips are what trip air-handler breakers on cold mornings in 1980s panels.
  • Rebates: Clay Electric’s Energy Smart program pays a heat-pump rebate to members on qualifying equipment. FPL’s program offers an instant credit on qualifying systems installed through enrolled contractors; ask whether Cook’s is enrolled. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] Neither is a tax credit; the federal one ended.
  • Surge protection: on the condenser and the air handler. Lightning season is long.
Thermostat showing auxiliary heat running on a 29-degree Lake City morning
AUX is normal at 29. AUX at 45 means the balance point was never set, and that is the cheapest winter fix we make.

The aux-heat conversation nobody has in a cooling town

Many heat pumps around Lake City were installed by contractors who treated the region as cooling-only, left the strips at whatever size came in the box, and never set the thermostat’s balance point. The result is a system that drops into expensive auxiliary heat at 45 degrees when it could carry the house alone to the mid-30s. We set that balance point on every install and check it on every winter maintenance visit. It is the cheapest winter savings in this catalog.

Heat pump questions we get from Columbia County

Why is the outdoor unit steaming on a cold morning? Is it broken?

That is a defrost cycle. On humid nights in the 30s the outdoor coil ices over, and the unit briefly reverses to melt it, which makes steam and sometimes a whoosh. It is normal. Ice that never clears, or stays all day, is not.

How long does it take Clay Electric to pay the heat pump rebate?

The co-op pays the member directly after installation, typically within a few months of purchase, and the equipment has to meet the program’s minimum efficiency. We put the qualifying rating on the quote so you know before you buy.

What is the honest life of a heat pump in this climate?

Fifteen years is a fair expectation for a maintained unit here; the long cooling season is the hard part, not the winter. Neglected units, or those under pine trees that never get the coil rinsed, go sooner.

Should I set the thermostat to emergency heat on a freeze night?

No. Emergency heat locks the system onto the strips, which cost several times more per hour than the heat pump. Leave it in normal heat mode; the system will bring the strips in on its own if it needs them.
