Setting it to 60 won't cool a Lake City house any faster
Most thermostat trouble in Lake City isn't the thermostat. It's a setting, a wire or a heat pump staging mistake. Here's what this service is, what it isn't, and how the visit runs.

A Lake City belief, corrected
Walk into a hot house in Eastside Village after a day at the VA and the instinct is to drop the thermostat to 60 to “get it cold faster.” It doesn’t. A standard air conditioner runs at one speed; the thermostat is a switch, not a throttle. Set to 60 or 74, the system produces the same cold air at the same rate. The only thing 60 does is run the unit long past 74 while you forget about it.
The second belief is the reverse: turn the system fully off while you’re at work to save money. In Lake City’s June-through-September humidity, that lets moisture soak into drywall and furniture all day, and the system then spends the evening wringing it back out. A setback of four to six degrees saves energy; shutting off doesn’t.
Both beliefs show up on thermostat service calls, which is why this page starts with what the service is not.
What the thermostat call leaves alone
- It’s not an upsell to a smart thermostat. A working, accurate, correctly wired non-programmable thermostat on a single-speed system in a 1980s ranch is fine. If yours is one of those, we’ll say so.
- It’s not a fix for a system that’s low on refrigerant or starved for air. A thermostat can’t make a dirty coil cool better. If the complaint is “it never reaches 76,” the thermostat is rarely the cause and we’ll check the rest.
- It’s not a quick swap with the old wires jammed onto new terminals. Heat pumps in particular have reversing-valve and auxiliary-heat terminals that a miswire turns into a winter-long strip-heat bill.
- It’s not Wi-Fi setup for a device you bought online that doesn’t match your equipment. We can tell you on the phone whether it will work with a heat pump, a dual-fuel setup or a two-stage system before you waste a Saturday.
What the thermostat call covers
Thermostat service at Cook’s covers replacement, relocation, rewiring, configuration and the app, for any system we service, whatever brand is on the cabinet.
The configuration is the part that matters most in this climate. Lake City swings between heating and cooling in the same week through November and again through March, and the first 32-degree night usually lands between late November and mid-December, with harder freezes into the 20s some years. A heat pump thermostat has to be told how and when to bring on auxiliary heat. Set wrong, the electric strips run every time the setpoint rises two degrees, and the Clay Electric or FPL bill for January looks like August. Set right, the strips only come on when the outdoor unit genuinely can’t keep up.
We also handle the placement problem common in older homes near Lake DeSoto: a thermostat on an exterior wall, in a hallway with no return, or over a lamp, reading a temperature the rest of the house doesn’t feel.

Forty minutes at the wall: the thermostat visit
- Phone triage. The person at 866-266-5709 asks what the thermostat is doing, what system it controls and whether it’s a heat pump. A blank screen with a battery compartment is often solved on the call.
- Verify the complaint. The technician checks the thermostat reading against a reference thermometer and watches what the equipment does when the setpoint changes. “The thermostat is broken” is confirmed or ruled out in ten minutes.
- Label and remove. Each low-voltage wire is tagged before the old base comes off. On an old mercury-bulb thermostat, the bulb is disposed of properly, not thrown in your trash.
- Check the other end. The wires land on the air handler’s control board too. A loose Y wire or a chewed cable in a Watertown crawlspace looks exactly like a bad thermostat from the hallway.
- Mount and wire the new unit. Level, on an interior wall, with the C wire run if the smart thermostat needs constant power and the old cable didn’t include one.
- Configure. System type, number of stages, heat pump settings, aux heat lockout, fan behavior, and the schedule you actually keep, not a default.
- Prove it. Call for cooling, watch the outdoor unit start. Call for heat, confirm the reversing valve shifts and the strips stay off until they should come on. Pair the app to your phone if there is one.
What to have ready
- Your Wi-Fi password, if you want app control.
- The thermostat you already bought, if any, in the box. We’ll check compatibility before opening it.
- Your schedule. Shift work at the hospital or a Target distribution center run is different from nine-to-five, and the program should match the real week.
- Access to the air handler. Closet, garage or attic hatch clear enough to reach the control board.
- A sense of the complaint. “It runs all night,” “the heat smells like it’s on strips,” “the screen flickers in a storm.” The detail speeds the diagnosis.
For landlords, a word: Lake City is about 40 percent owner-occupied, which means a lot of thermostats are in rentals. A locking cover or an app-controlled unit with range limits keeps tenants comfortable and the system out of the 60-degree trap.
Thermostats and storms
Summer lightning is Lake City’s everyday hazard, and a surge that comes in on the power line often takes the thermostat with the control board. If yours died after a storm, tell us; the technician will test the transformer and board before assuming a new thermostat fixes it. Surge protection on both units is cheap insurance against the next one, and we can add it during the same visit.
Thermostat visits, Lake City edition
Do you handle my part of Columbia County, or only inside Lake City?
The Lake City route runs from Five Points and Watertown out to Fort White, White Springs, Ellisville, Lulu and Olustee. A thermostat call anywhere on it is fine; we’ll group it with nearby stops.
Someone really answers at two in the morning?
Yes, a person, not a recording. A thermostat that quit in the small hours of a freeze night is a real emergency when the house is dropping into the 50s, and it gets handled like one, with no after-hours surcharge.
Is there a fee just for driving out?
You’re quoted a diagnostic or service price when you call, before anyone drives anywhere, and that price doesn’t change based on the hour. There’s no separate trip charge layered on top [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]].
Are the people who show up Cook's employees or contractors?
Cook’s dispatches every Lake City job from its own board in Palm Coast, with Sean leading the technicians; ask who is coming when you book. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY: staffing]]
Can a smart thermostat tell me when something's wrong with the system?
The better ones log runtime and send alerts for things like a temperature that won’t reach setpoint or a filter interval. That’s useful for a rental or a second home. They don’t diagnose; they tell you to call.
